Remember the EarthRise – by Daniel Benveniste

Dear friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances, 

I’m sure I’m not alone in finding the events in Ukraine to be nothing less than a waking nightmare. We all do what we can to contribute, but the feelings of powerlessness persist. The other day I put together the attached two page statement. Feel free to forward it. I’m hoping it will make its way into Russia. . .  for what it’s worth, which may not be much but we all do what we can.

In 1932 when the world was edging toward war Sigmund Freud, in an essay titled “Why war?”  asserted that “anything that encourages the growth of emotional ties between men” and “fosters the growth of civilization” works against war. 

The first EarthRise photo was taken by William Anders on Apollo 8 and it had a powerful effect on the people of the world. Many more earthrise photos have been taken since then and they all invite us to look at ourselves, care for the earth, and love one another.
